A real-time simulator capable of studying dynamic insulation coordinate in a MMC-HVDC system

When the requirement to perform dynamic insulation coordinate on a real-time simulator has recently surfaced in the design cycle of MMC-HVDC systems, accurate real-time simulation models for surge arrestors and MMC are of great importance to perform such tests. This paper presents an iterative algorithm to solve the mathematical model of arrestor and a multi-rate model for the MMC-HVDC system running on a commercially available real-time simulator using standard multi-core processors and FPGAs. The accuracy of the simulation results and the real-time performances are demonstrated at the end of this paper.
