NorthConnect HVDC interconnector
NorthConnect is a project set up to develop, consent, build, own and operate an HVDC electrical interconnector between Peterhead in Scotland and Simadalen in Norway. The 665km long, 1400MW interconnector will provide an electricity transmission link allowing the two nations to exchange power and increase use of renewable energy. The intention is for the HVDC interconnector to be operational by 2023. NorthConnect is one of several new HVDC interconnectors that will interconnect the UK to the European mainland, the Nordic Power system or offshore generation. Collectively, their commissioning will shift the UK power system away from a grid dominated by synchronous machines towards a grid of inverters and synchronous machines. In this paper, the main design features and parameters of the NorthConnect interconnector are outlined. Additionally, the challenges and issues associated with the scheme are described, including equipment optimization, fault response, AC TOV suppression, black-start operation, compliance with TSO's requirements, cyber security and software testing.
