Enhancement of transient stability on AC transmission by means of controlled series and parallel compensation

Long distance AC transmission is often subject to stability problems which limit the transmission capability. To increase the transmission capability power system stabilizers (PSS) and series compensation have been used for decades. For damping of system oscillations the use of Static Var Compensator (SVC) was introduced years ago. The latest development in this field is the use of controlled series compensation (CSC). The authors compare the damping effect of SVCs and CSCs. The study involved a detailed simulation of a complex system consisting of three subsystems.<>
